Hero Fish Douses Flames At Elementary School

POSTED: 8:14 a.m. EST January 30, 2004
EAGAN, Minn. -- There's nothing fishy about the tale of Dory -- the hero fish.

The red Beta fish is the mascot of a third-grade class at Trinity Lone Oak Lutheran School in Eagan.

The teacher, Linda Krienke, said a fire broke out on her desk last weekend. It not only set off the school's alarm, but it was also hot enough to cause Dory's fish bowl to explode.

The water doused the flames and firefighters found only glowing embers on the desk. One of the firemen discovered Dory flopping around on the floor -- and called for a glass of water.

Dory survived and now the kids are writing stories about how their hero fish saved the school.

I hate to be cynical, but that fish didn't live... It burned up or suffocated out of water, and the teacher bought a new one as soon as she heard the story so the kids wouldn't be heartbroken.

How did the fish do this? The heat from the fire shattered the glass bowl and the resulting gush of water putting out the fire.

What was the teacher doing playing with fire on her desk?

I can't believe I laughed out loud to that. That was poor and I *knew* someone was going to do that. Geez.

If it was hot enough to shatter the fish bowl, it was hot enough to cook that fish.

I've seen a fish put out a fire!
Was invited to dinner @ our neighbors. They had a fishbowl with a beta for a centerpiece, with lighted candles floating in it. Looked pretty cool.

Over desert, the beta jumped into one of the candle ... put out the flame and flopped briefly in the pool of molten wax. No survivors.
Was funny as hell.

I think it's a true story. As the water heated up the fish jumped out. The fish wasn't cooked as the water got hot enough to crack the bowl because it was no longer in the water. Betas are labyrinth fish. They live in rice paddies and small puddles in Asia that have very low levels of dissolved oxygen. They have special organs that enable them to breath atmospheric oxygen for extended periods. As long as the fish survived the jump, which is not unheard of at all, there's no reason why the story couldn't be true.
