Is it just me or is ATOT kind of fascist with the moderating? Mods seem to have absolute, anonymous power, answer to nobody, and have pretty much free reign here. I can understand completely if a mod tempbans someone for an attitude problem or something (i.e. woot), but it seems like they also ban somewhat arbitrarily. If someone asks a legitimate question and is civil about it, i don't think that's grounds for a ban IMO. I dont hang out in P&N so I havent actually seen any abuse firsthand, but it's the whole "don't ever question my authority or ask about my decisions because that insolence will not be tolerated" thing that makes it feel like fascism sometimes.
IMO it'd be better if we KNEW who the mods were. The lack of anonymity usually prevents some of the "god complex" that can develop when people can anonymously punish others without beind held accoutable for their actions. It reminds me of being an NCO in the Marine Corps. I had a lot of power over my troops but they answered to me and I answered to my superiors. If word got out that I was abusive or unfair, I would have to answer for my actions. The biggest leadership problems I've seen occurred when you had a poor or unfair leader in charge of Marines who didn't have his or her own superior to report to. Thus, they had virtually absolute power and many times that would cause major problems within a unit. The only saving grace was that a) Marines rotate on a regular basis so he would never be there forever, and b) we had a system called 'request mast' which would allow any Marine to voice a legitimate complaint and it would be taken up the chain of command until it was resolved in a satisfactory manner. So if he took it to his immediate superior and his superior dismissed it, said superiod would still be required to forward it to HIS superior for further action or until it was resolved.
While ATOT is certainly not the military, it does sometimes appear to be nazi in nature. The very fact that I could be punished for posting this should be sufficient evidence. I am not being offensive, rude, or even belligerent by this post but yet I am likely to be punished for for my "insolence." It surprises me that with the number of liberal and intellectual people here, there isn't an uproar caused by this type of behavior. Imagine if police officers had that kind of power. Where you could never report an officer for anything and he was under no rules at all to be fair. It's bad enough NOW and there ARE rules that are designed to keep them in check.
This all reminds me of the whole "power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely" quote.
