So, after much deliberation I have decided to upgrade my puter, using some of the old components and buying new ones. I will be salvaging my 30 GB HD, which will be wiped clean prior to installation, my dvd-rom drive, and my radeon 9700 pro video card.

Here's the new setup:

Antec Soho case with 400 watt smart power supply

1 512 MB DDR400 Kingston Hyper X module

Epox EP-8RDA+ mo bo

AMD Athlon XP 2500 Barton 333 fsb (retail w/ fan and heatsink)

Any recommendations or thoughts will be appreciated. Also, is the DDR 400 memory worth the extra money? because the cost difference between the 400 and say 333 is quite substantial. Is it okay to just run one memory chip, and should i think of a better cooling fan than the one packaged with the chip? Thanks for reading this.

First off, you should get eith 2x256MB or 2x512MB so that you can use the dual channel mode, it will give you a lot better performance. I am planning my new system with a 2500+ also and am contemplating on whether to get the PC3200 over the PC2700. Although you will only need the 2700 for the Barton chip now, it may be better to get the faster ram now so in the future when you get a chip with a 400MHZ FSB you can stilll use your ram.
