Here's my plan

So I'm ready to buy a CPU, problem is, I need a new GPU soon too. Currently have a 7600GT on my AMD 64 3200+ S939.

I was originally looking at either the E6750 or the Q6600, but to conserve resources (namely $$$) in the short run, I'm now considering a 2160 Dual Core, a decent HSF and OC'ing it to 3GHz and saving the difference ($100+) to put toward a new video card.

Does that make sense now? I suspect I will see a huge jump in speed on such a system over the 3200+...am I right?

This will all be going on a IP35-E with 2GB Crucial Ballistix. I can update the processor at a later date to a Quad Core...maybe a Penryn before I have enough $$.

Good ideas?

Yeah, I saw your thread too late...I already have the Ballistix. Bummer, but I got the 2gb for about $60 AR. They are not as good for the max OC, eh?

Any recommendations on a HSF that I can use later on a C2D or Quad Core?

tuniq would be your best bet if you're going quad when you upgrade. otherwise, there are plenty of cheap hsf's for $15-20 out there. what ballistix do you have? is it the 4-4-4-12 ddr2 800?

Keep checking NewEgg. Big Typhoon open box for $18 plus $6 ship.

May I suggest the E2180 instead of the E2160, only ~$9 more and the extra 1X multipler should allow a slower, cooler northbridge and/or a higher OC.

Or the AC Freezer 7 Pro for about $25 inc. delivery from Newegg too.
I was considering the Freezer 7 and the CM TX2 before I realized they both use plastic push pins intstead of a backing plate and screws. So I'm now thinking this Masscool is the answer, based on the same technology, and cheaper too. I don't consider the extra effort of installing a backing plate an issue.

I'll consider it for sure! I just thought that the boost from going from 3200+ to an overclocked dual core (the 2160, 2180) would be enough of a boost to keep me happy in the short term, and I could use the savings to buy a 8800. Later, I can upgrade to Penryn, maybe for a bit less $$, and upgrade my wife from my old 3200+ to the 2180.

Freezer is noisy at full speed. You'll also need to trim the Freezer to clear NB.

Do you have another recommendation? I do like quiet, but how much air do I need to push to cool this 2180 on a 3.2 OC?

BTW, my case is a Coolermaster Centurion.
