Here's a silly question: Why are whole cashews more expensive than cashew halves.

Actually you probably get more if you buy them in halves. They take up less space and probably hold more nuttage.

Because some people will only eat whole ones. Someone has to sort out all the pieces, and that costs money.

I'm sorry, that was uncalled for... your face was doing much better last time I saw it. :)

Yeah I realized that when I posted but I posted anyway. It's like I have possessed fingers or something. I dunno.

Because whole cashews provide better presentation than old, broken, been dropped and stomped on, cashew halves and pieces.

It's true of pecans, walnuts. etc. as well. For selling pieces they can use bits broken in shelling and (guessing) parts of nuts with bad spots.

You pay extra to lick and chew on whole nuts. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

If you have ever held a whole nut in your hand, you will know the answer to this question. ;)

supply and demand... you can make two halves from a whole, but not the other way around.

When I worked at a grocery store in high school, we used to intentionally drop the tins of "whole" cashews until we could tell that they were reduced to "halves and pieces". That was entertaining.

Like others have said whole cost > half cost > broken bit costs. Open up a nut and see if you can get it out of the shell whole. I bet most of what you get out for most nuts will be halves and pieces. That is why the bigger ones cost more. Harder to get out whole, have to sort them to make certain the smaller bits aren't in the container, and have to handle them so they don't break.

Hey now, that was technically the ground, which can be more sanitary than floors!

Yeah, there is some lingering nasal damage that has adversely affected my sense of taste, but from the outside you can't really tell. It has been almost 10 months now.

An interesting fact about cashews is why they aren't sold in the shell. Has anyone ever wondered that? Why can't you purchase cashews in the shell? A simple google search will provide this trivia bit.

Cashew shells are toxic.
