here's a new one: computer won't connect to the internet unless through shared connection?

Had a home computer hooked up to the internet through an older computer, which was sharing its DSL internet connection.

I'm trying to get the newer computer to connect directly to the internet now, the old computer is dead.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work when hooked directly through the DSL modem.

I've tried:
Repairing the connection - error message that it could not renew the IP address
Running the New Connection Wizard - didn't work
Running the Network Setup Wizard - error message that it couldn't complete
Disabling and re-enabling the onboard LAN card - no effect
Checking all the connection properties - everything was and is on the standard, automatic settings

I've done all this troubleshooting over the phone, as I'm away at school right now. How can I make it work?! Would putting a different LAN card in the machine make a difference?

No suggestions? Adding another network card did work. Whatever settings that were a problem seem to have only been associated with the onboard LAN. The new card works fine.

Interesting. There is a win2k machine in my house that won't ping or get an ip address through DHCP, but works fine with a static ip address...

if u can't get an ip from the dhcp serv, make sure:
power cycle modem (1 minute) and then turn on pc
tcp/ip is bound to the network adapter
are you getting a 169 or a 0000 ip?
do a ipconfig/renew in command prompt rather then the repair button to get a better error message and to check whether it's a socket error
make sure u are not running a firewall

try these first
