Here's a good one...wireless kills my internet connection

Been struggling with this for a couple of hours...it was working fine a couple of days ago last time I tried using my lappy wirelessly at home.

The config has been set up for almost two years, no problems. Today, I logon my lappy wirelessly (about 3 feet from the router) and then after a few minutes later my main machine (hardwired to the router) keeps coming up with "A network cable has been unplugged" once every couple of minutes. Plus, the lappy cannot stay connected for snot. So I have intermitting connection loss with the main machine, and intermitting connection success with the lappy.

Here's the rub: if I hardwire the lappy, everything is fine. The main machine no longer constantly loses connection, the lappy doesn't occassionally gain connection...both are simply connected 100% of the time. If I go back to wireless, I lose internet on both machines.

Both XP, both latest critical fixes, etc. Any idea what's going on?

Have you tried resetting (unplugging) the cable modem and router so everything can reset? Could also try using whatever Reset button is on the router to set it back to factory defaults and seeing if that makes it work again. THen just go through setting bakc up any WEP, MAC, etc stuff on there.

I tried the power cycle on the router, but that didn't work. I'll try cycling the modem tonight when I get home, and if that doesn't work, I'll try the hard reset of the router.

Thanks for the advice

I have basically the same problem on my network. I have a wireless router which is connected to a wired router which is connected to the cable modem. My wireless router stays up but the wired router dies out and needs to be rebooted every 20 minutes or so. Very frustrating.

Thanks Franky...power-cycling the the cable modem did the trick. Didn't have to do a hard-reset on the router, either.
