My original pair of SCL4s lasted 16 months. The warranty replacement I got is now fraying (same place -- wire in ear loop area) at 14. I'm past the two-year period, so it looks like I'm SOL unless I want to pay $109 to get yet another replacement pair -- but I paid less for these new. (Not sure what this poster did to get an exchange deal.)

Besides the breakdown, I absolutely love these earphones: sound, fit, isolation, everything. Any suggestions for a durable equivalent? Must be non-bassy.

scl4's aren't in production anymore, do you know what model they would offer you as a discounted replacement?

I think you have just cause to demand a replacement with a current model. It is a known fault, and Shure have claimed to have solved the problem on other earphones. Write to Shure customer support, and if you have no luck post back.

Finally got around to inquiring. They said SE425s for $145.

Worth it? Durable? Should I try to get the 315 for less instead?

Funny, I sent my broken pair in, intending to approve the 425 deal when they called.

Instead, they just sent me a replacement set of SCL4s for free. Not bad! Hope I still qualify for the upgrade when these crap out again in 14 months. ;)
