Dude, they're positioned to evacuate our embassy if need be. This is a core Marine Corps competency, and I for one applaud team Obama for being prepared. Maybe for once we won't get our dicks knocked in the dirt from being unprepared.

Not to mention that the advertised presence of a freakin' BLT may well deter any planned attacks on our embassy. Terrorists tend to prefer the soft underbelly, and a compound quickly reinforceable by a Marine battalion backed by Harriers and Cobras is anything but soft.

Not sure why we even still have an embassy there. Libya is a mess with various factions in control of different parts of the country and are all trying to gain control of the valuable resources. Oil output has dropped to next to nothing... so what little legitimate government there is probably relies on U.S. handouts.

It's only going to get far worse. As more of those countries run out of oil, the people become unemployed, the wealth flees the decaying husks, the people will become more angry and violently lash out.

The USS Bataan is to be in the area "in a matter of days" in what was described as a "precautionary" measure in case conditions in Libya worsen.

Good to see they are taking steps, but why not just immediately evacuate? How do conditions deteriorate below daily attacks, and the Libyan premier being violently ousted from his own house? Not to mention, it would seem that any jihadist organization in Libya knows they have a couple of days to swarm the embassy prior to reinforcements arriving, so long as they can read Yahoo news.

The next few days will be crucial, it seems.

I doubt that the man in the street will much notice the drop in oil output, given that Gaddafi & cronies have been stealing the revenues for decades, pushing them into non-Libyan accounts & fueling their military.

For a second there, I thought you were talking about the Repub vision for this country.

Even if 100% of oil revenues went to Gaddafi.... The petroleum industry in Libya accounted for half of the GDP and nearly all of their export revenue. When output drops and the petroleum industry is shut down I would imagine quite a few Libyans would notice.

Our conservatives Congressmen vote (YA) in a bill that reduced embassy security and cry when shit happens. "Dad you trusted me to drive the car so my accident is your fault."

You're right, of course. I was being overly cynical.

Well, I think after the dust settles in Libya, you know, like twenty years from now when the oil is gone and the USA (read - USA Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Halliburton) has no vested economic interest there anymore, that country will be like all those other conflicted African countries that we put on our ignore list (but our arms industry just simply adore).

Saudi Arabia and the like have diversified and invested heavily outside of their oil industry, all while managing to keep its leadership and religion intact. One would think all the other oil producing nations could/would do the same.

Should be pretty interesting to see who comes out on top in Libya without any heavy handed military interference from the outside.

My bet is on a corrupt theocratic leadership conveniently unified against the powerful "Shaytan led infidel Christian threat".
