Everyone has a "right" to a fire department that they don't pay for? Or are you saying there should be a federal mandate for all persons to have fire coverage regardless of location?

Have fun establishing fire departments in rural Alaska when you have $375 to build, equip, and hire staff for a fire department.

I would say it needs to be proportional to the population and the size of the area, I'm not going to start suggesting how to set up fire departments though, I'm just going to say if you live in a rural area there is no way the fire department should be able to refuse to help you. That's retarded.

Not at all, I don't pay income tax, the only tax I really pay is value added tax. Which means that 20% of the money I spend on non-essentials goes to tax, That's really not that much. If you don't pay any tax... you get free healthcare. Health care is free, the more wealthy you get you start to pay for it. Win. Win.

Oh Christ.

I guess TN is just all rural? No tax money to spend on stuff like fire departments? Do they just let the roads go to hell in those areas too? Are all the children home schooled?

Yet another reason not to live in middle amerika I guess.

no, not all of TN is like that.

Have you ever ventured past the comfortable borders of Whale's Vagina, CA?

So is not paying $75 to have fire service.

There are people who chose to live in the middle of nowhere, where the closest fire department is hours away. Do you think you and I should pay to have a fire department for the 500 people who decide to live out there?

The blue states send enough money to the red states as it is. I'm not paying for a fire department to be on standby outside every mobile home in bumbfucknowhereville.

My state is the size of Texas, and we have a state level fire department.

You obviously dont build a fire house in every one-horse-town, but you do what you can for em. You use water planes etc.

Lol, don't be jealous.

I mentioned that I don't pay income tax, did you miss that?

Here's fun reading:

The English NHS cares for 49 million people (100% of the population of England); US public healthcare currently covers about 83 million (around 28% of the US population).

For a direct comparison, that means that in England the government spends around $3,200 per capita on healthcare and covers the entire population whereas in the US the federal government spends around $3,700 per capita and yet covers less than a third of the population.

Take away those 80 million covered by the US’s state healthcare (which doesn’t cover all uninsured Americans, so this is being generous) from the States’ 300 million population, we’re left with 220 million Americans to account for the other $1.1 trillion spent in the US each year on private healthcare.

If I’ve got my maths right, that works out as $5000 for every American in the private system – almost $2,000 a year more than the NHS costs.***

Nah we're not really jealous, more so annoyed at your sense of entitlement (such as those in the OP story who think they're owed something for the pure fact that they exist).

Christ no, not unless absolutely necessary.

I'm curious, how much extra do you pay for a fire department up in the Bay area?

Lol, don't be jealous.

Why would I be jealous? I work hard to cover my living expenses. I would feel like a leech to let others pay for my basic needs.

I'm guessing the hard working people in England, feel the same way as most here do about you - a troll that spends too much time on the internet than working and paying for their own expenses.

If it's like the other story, these folks in the country have elected not to have their property taxes fund a fire dept but the nearby city is willing to cover them if they pay a fee.

Only people to blame are the home owners. They took the risk and got burned.

Yep. More likely than not this was the case. In most counties, especially if you live in a large metropolitan area, your taxes are already funding the fire department. But in smaller counties, the local government may not be funding the fire department. Generally what happens is there is a fee collected, think of it as paying for emergency service cause that's exactly what it is. The firefighters risk their friggin lives and have to be on call 24/7. Pay the friggin $75 or whatever it is dammit.

There are two parties to blame. Blame the local community who are too cheap to fund the fire department. Blame the local homeowners who are too cheap to support the local fire department. At least until THEY need help.

Pretty sick to just stand there and watch it burn. Why bother showing up at all? Seems to be rubbing it in, should at least put out the fire and send a Bill.

Humanitarian reasons. They'll still work to save lives. And they'll stop the fire from spreading to houses who have paid up.

Hal9000. I love the UK. I have friends there. They are great people. I'm glad most of the country does not think or act like you do.

Nice link, but anyway...

I'd rather pay 40% more and get great coverage and service. The Americans who can't afford to pay get the "free" healthcare.

So you don't have a job? Congrats. Or perhaps you earn minimum wage. Maybe you should elaborate.

Here we call what you receive welfare.

Because you have inadequate health care.

I'm a student who isn't eligible to pay taxes yet, I will when I'm out of Uni. It's all good.

I know, I thought it was fun.

In the UK everyone gets the "free" health care, unless you fancy paying for private healthcare.

Nope. I know I have much better coverage than you and based on where I live, I'm surrounded by some of the best hospitals in the world where many people from around the world come to for specialized care.

Nobody needs a lesson in government here, you morons.

The question is - is it right for firefighters to stand there while a poor person's only posessions burn to the ground.

No it's not.

Yes it is. He chose not to pay. That is life. He took a gamble, and statistically he probably would have been okay. Unfortunately a long tail end event occured and he got nailed by the fire. And when shit goes wrong it goes wrong bad quickly.

Thats what happens when you are long trailerhome and naked short fire and god decides to exercize his option to burn down a trailer. Unfortunately the random trailer chosen was the one with no insurance.
