HERE?S A SURPRISE...AND OUT OF CALIFORNIA, TOO! WARNING Gun Thread.

Santa Cruz is a very pretty coastal town in the Bay Area of California, and as such is usually a sanctuary for left-wingers and their various causes. Oddly enough, the Santa Cruz Sentinel had a favorable article yesterday about parents who buy guns for their children and teach them responsible handling. The article even quoted a gun-control advocate who admitted, "If there?s going to be a gun in the house, the parents who teach their kids how to handle it are doing the right thing." Another excerpt from the article:

"...children who grow up in hunting families develop a deep respect for guns and their dangers. When such a child receives his or her own gun, the weapon itself delivers only half the thrill; the other half comes from the trust it conveys."

Hmmm..."trust" and "respect." Sounds like good old-fashioned American family values to me. Although I?m sure the Brady Foundation would disagree.

That wasn't yesterday. Yesterday was Christmas. The Sentinel isn't printed on Christmas. It was a couple days ago, I would know, I have a subscription. I was as surprised to see that in there as anyone, considering this town is right up there with Berkeley, politically.

edit, had to throw in a picture of my hometown: Lighthouse.

My kids are going to sleep with a loaded gun from the day they are born.
Aint nobody touching their 2nd commandment rights. 😀

What is wrong with that? I got my first gun at the age of 7. My father was a police officer and he taught me how to shoot the weapon and most of all, taught me the needed respect for the weapon. I now have 8 of them and I carry one with me anywhere and everywhere I go (I do have a permit to do so). Just because you choose to ignore your constitutional rights, and those of others, doesn't mean that it is wrong to own a weapon, imho.

Out of curiosity, how do you do that if you travel via airplane? Especially with 9/11? (I don't know about this kind of schtuff. 😉 ) Do they make you check it or something?

And, my opinion on the subject: My dad had guns when I was a child. I watched him take care of them, and he taught me respect for them. I think I would do the same for my children if I had them. (Guns...or children...lol)

I don't like the idea of arming children. I don't mind gun owners letting children fire under supervision as long as the guns are locked up. I didn't even think children could legally own firearms.

Hey Ulf why do you find it surprising? As a matter of fact a freind and I are heading up that way to do some Boar hunting in a week-n-half.....

and just whats so wrong with it??? I got my first hunting license @ 12...as taught alot of respect for guns and gun ownership before that...I know how to handle a firearm properly and have so since the age of 10 or so...no accidents, no police problems,ect...I think it a very good way to teach children respect for something that can be dangerous in the WRONG hands
edit: you can't legally own a weapon until the age of 18 anyway

OMFG, I am ignoring one of my constitutional rights! I have to go out and buy a gun right away!

I did not know that ensuring the viability of gun manufacturers was a constitutional right.

I haven't learned how to properly use a firearm yet, but I grew up in a family that had firearms around 24/7. Father and grandfather were hunters, and I learned at a very early age that a gun is NOT a toy. I learned a lot of respect for firearms and I am going to convey the same message to my kids. The ONLY way to get proper gun control in a household is to expose your children to the weapon and teach them about it. It takes a lot of the awe factor out of it for them and they'll know the dangers it possesses. Doing any less is raising the possibly that your child may come across the gun, get all giddy with excitement and either shoot himself or his friend while they screw around with it. Teach children about firearms as early as possible, in fact a school course on firearms usage and safety would probably help raise gun awareness. Do the same type of program like the Sex courses or the drugs courses in elementary school.

To answer an earlier question:

The right to carry a weapon concealed is only available in certain states and then only by license (except for one state where concealed carry is legal without permit). Carrying a firearm openly varies from state to state. For many many (not sure exactly, maybe forever nearly) years it has been illegal to carry a firearm onto a plane. When you travel with a firearm you have to declare it at the counter. It has to be packed in your checked luggage under specific requirements. 9/11 hasn't changed any of the laws, although some airports are a little more picky about the particulars now.

A Liberal twists the intent....as usual.

We ensure the viability of Publishers by using tax money for buying books and placing them in 'Public Libraries' and even give them the power to influence what books are available, all under the flag of the 1st Amendment. Show me a correlation involving Gun Makers.
