A state lawmaker known for championing the rights of gun-owners pointed a loaded firearm at the chest of a reporter during a recent interview at the Capitol.

Republican Sen. Lori Klein was showing off her raspberry-pink handgun when she aimed it at a journalist who was interviewing her in the lounge just outside the Senate chambers.
According to the story that was published Sunday in the Arizona Republic, Klein's .380 Ruger was loaded and did not have a safety to keep the gun from going off.

But Klein told the reporter, Richard Ruelas, that he didn't need to worry because, "I just didn't have my hand on the trigger."

The story was one in a five-part series running this week in which the paper looks at the culture of guns in the Grand Canyon State. The series, according to the paper, will run every other day through Sunday.

Klein was being interviewed for the series because of her views on gun control and did not return phone calls seeking comment as to why she pulled out the weapon. No where in the story does the reporter say he felt threatened. But local gun activists contacted Sunday by the Arizona Guardian were shocked and appalled by the Senator's actions.

“Whoever would do something like that needs to have a better grounding in gun safety before ever laying a hand on a firearm,” said Rob Mermelstein, the range master of the Phoenix Rod and Gun Club.

Mermelstein went on to say that Klein's actions were "unconscionable" and goes against every standard of gun safety he teaches at the club. In addition, he says, these kinds of stories hurt the cause of gun owners as they try to keep the government from restricting their Second Amendment rights.

"It goes with out saying firearms owners are waging a nonstop battle for PR and any type of incident like this is not favorable to the gun-owing public," he said during a telephone interview on Sunday.

Klein made headlines in January after bringing her loaded gun into the House and Senate chambers just two days after the mass shooting in Tucson.

Klein says she carries the gun in her purse. In the past she's said that her Ruger goes wherever she does. And according to Sunday's article, the Republican lawmaker said her gun was "so cute" right before pulling out.

She then pointed it at Ruelas, who reported the red dot from the gun's laser sighting was visible on his chest. Klein later told the Republic reporter that she has taken informal gun training and was "taught gun safety by her father." Ruelas was unavailable for comment.

During her first year at the Capitol, Klein has been very vocal about protecting the rights of gun owners. She's also been a big advocate of allowing owners to carry their guns just about anywhere they want, including the workplace.

A stupid and irresponsible move like this ought to get your c&c permit suspended at minimum.

yep, that's the stupidest thing she could have done short of actually pulling the trigger.

I am a big advocate of the Second Amendment and the right to carry, however, what that person, Republican Sen. Lori Klein, did, if true, is a crime and ought be investigated and if found to be true, charges filed.

Stupid person.

Terrible gun safety, also I would press charges against her. It does not matter if the gun is unloaded or if your hand is not on the trigger, you never point a gun at anything you do not intend on killing.

Great, that just helps the gun control lobby, what an idiot. Her license to carry should be revoked, and charges filed.

Klein later told the Republic reporter that she has taken informal gun training..

Clearly she needs formal gun training.

Don't disagree there.

Firearm safety fail. That is such a terrible idea I don't even know where to start. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Agree on possible charges, that's brandishing or even some kind of wanton endangerment.

Sounds to me like it's a little too stupid. Seems more like this lady has a hidden agenda to get guns banned/restricted and is using this facade to accomplish her goals than this being a genuine happening.

It's an Arizonan Republican. There really is no limit to how stupid they come.

WTF is wrong with you, anyway? The lawmaker is known for championing gun rights. It's utterly ironic that one of gun advocates' complaints wrt anti-gun people is that they don't know anything about guns, when one of their own strongest advocates doesn't know anything, either. CCW? Not in Arizona. No training required-

This is likely her cute little heater- she was right about one thing, that the likelihood of it going off accidentally was remote, given that it's double action only-

I mean, when you make it look like a toy, then it is, right? Maybe they'll start making them in different colors, so they'll match the bimbo's outfits...

Your generalizations are irrelevant. A gun advocate senator serving her first term pulls a loaded gun out and points it at the person interviewing her for a piece on gun culture? If she isn't a plant for a hidden agenda, I don't know who is.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around why the fuck she would do this? Hell, the reporter said it didn't bother him, why the hell not didn't it bother you? I'd freak and probably try to disarm her out of instinct.

Agree with others, this is about the worst thing you can do aside from actually shooting somebody. You don't EVER point a weapon at somebody loaded or not. NEVER, unless you intend to kill them. I'd have to pick up my throat after something like this because it already fell on the floor.

If she learned safety from her dad, he's doing it terribly wrong. 4 rules - obey them always. If you don't bad things can (and likely will) happen.

That's soooo dim, so steeped in denial that it practically reeks. Her Wing Nut credentials are impeccable-

It makes absolutely no difference.

Let's examine the reality of the situation: Someone suddenly starts a career in state politics, proclaims themselves as a gun advocate, and then points a loaded gun at a reporter writing a piece on guns.

Now, let's look at what's more likely:
1. She has absolutely no idea of how law works, and has no idea of any known gun ownership standards, despite being a "gun advocate" senator.
2. She is personally attempting to dislodge attempts to keep the second amendment intact, or is in collusion with those with this goal.

This is a standard infiltration strategy, and it's not my fault that you're too foolish to recognize it.

Come on it was only a journalist, not as bad as if she'd pointed it at a rat or a rattlesnake or something.

Of course it can't be as simple as her being a moron.

over her idiotic behavior.
