I've got 9.1 running on a system at home. I set it up to test Spamassassin for a project for a client.

Once you figure out all of the server services that Mandrake disables by default, it works pretty well.

I installed SuSE a couple days ago, couldn't get any programs to install so it's sitting here in my desk waiting for me to get ambitious again.
 
Holy broadband download speeds, batman! :Q

<-- is going to download the "basic" Gentoo 1.4 ISO tonight. Even the "little" 74MB that it consumes is going to be a royal PITA on dialup. 🙁
 
Ouch... at least you have something slightly better than dial-up 🙂.

The download speed on mine speeded up quite a bit. They must have been busy, but about ½ way through, they all speeded upto just under 80KB. Not bad considering that it has to go though a satelite (All communications in our town to the internet & phone)
Now I just need to prep the computer.

The only "broadband" that I can get in this area is 128Kbit/sec fixed wireless (for $30/month). 🙁

Oh yea, I see you're from Alaska. Does the satellite connection for your town have latency issues, like the expensive two-way satellite internet that is marketed to the continental 48 states, but nobody seems to use?

Just as with every satelite connection. Latency is terrible :|. You know I have trouble playing 'lite' games on the internet such as Starcraft or Star Wars Rebellion :|:|
Locally in our town I am however near T3. Playing games against somebody here is very enjoyable. It does however have a severe limit of that there is hardly anybody with games I like.

Your wireless option... I would go for it. Only $30/mo. Roughly only about $10-$15 more/mo than dial-up. Because if you think about it. $120/yr is nothing. Only $0.33 cents/day....
 
I have went kind of Nix crazy as of late. I now have at least one machine running FreeBSD, RH9.0, RH8.0, OpenBSD, Solaris, and Darwin.

I really don't like mandrake. Actually I don't like the drank config junk....
 
Oh yeah on note of downloading. I am on an OC 3 now so if you guys need an ISO just ask. I can download and mail. 😉 And I might be able to cover shipping who knows. 😛
 
Well, I've got Gentoo semi-installed (downloaded god only knows how many MB of portage tree stuff earlier). Next up is running a bootstrap script that will download many many more MBs of base software (like GCC). This is fun, except for the waiting. 🙂

Someone suggested to me that a good Linux variant to try (for a beginner) was Gentoo.

I've downloaded stages{1-3}-x86-1.4 rc4.tar.bz2 but I don't know what to do next. Seems I have to write some script but my eyes started glazing over (easy for an old-timer 😛) and I haven't been able to install it. Tried to burn a cd but didn't have any luck getting it to startup.

I've partitioned my 80G WD w/8mb into three separate segments.

1. Win98
2. WinXp
3. Not formatted as of now but to be used by "Linux" (Dantoo).

If I could burn a CD that actually boots (read that as a request for help) I'd be glad to burn a copy and mail it to whoever needs it. 🙂

Assuming you are talking to me, I already have the files downloaded and I have Nero and a burner so I should be able to do this myself. Is there any trick? Maybe I need to download a different ISO file? Advice?

 
Nero is what I use 🙂.
But to make a bootable ISO CD, you can not use nero's wizzard. You accually have to start a new session...

In Nero, click File, then down to burn Image. Select the iso, and it should burn just fine. Bootability requires the iso maintainer to do some extra work. My Debian disks worked fine, although I've let the machine collect dust for the past couple of weeks...

Therein lies your problem. You need a bootable ISO file to get it to work right. This ( ftp://mirror.iawnet.sandia.gov/pub/....4/livecd/basic/gentoo-basic-1.4-20030806.iso ) is what you need; just burn in Nero as an ordinary ISO file (File menu > Burn Image...), as it has been set up to be bootable so you don't need to do any extra work.

IMHO, Gentoo is definitely not for a beginner. You'd be better off with Mandrake or Redhat (I prefer to recommend the latter). Debian is nice, but it's in the same category as Gentoo: a nice OS to work with once you've got some experience with some of the "simpler" ones. 🙂

I would have to agree with jliechty.
I was going to download red hat. But I could not find their download page. So I just went over to Mandrakes sight. In essence Mandrake and Red Hat are the same, just a different user interface.

Back when I tried out 6.1, it would not run that well because my video card was too new. I do not think I will have that problem again 🙂

I'm about ready to take meine Computer to Das Schei&szlig;haus to flush it down the Toilette, because of a memory incompatibility between my DDR SDRAM and my Epox 8RDA. :disgust:

Incidentally, this prevents me from compiling stuff in VMWare for an extended period of time (without getting a BSOD), so my Linux installation effort has come to a grinding halt. 🙁
