Here goes nothing...

Next week hopefully... I'm going to get around to ripping apart some walls and dangling Cat 6 cables thru them... this will all run into a patch panel in the basement on a bonafide computer rack where my domain server is located, along with my cable modem, vonage box (which should be in the mail now), and 24 port gigabit switch.

I'm looking forward to the task... but not too forward to the wiring!!! Anyhoo... if anybody has any tips as far as stringing wires down three stories to make it to the basement safely... I'm all ears!

I am just debating whether or not I should rip out parts of the wall and do it that way, as it's probably a lot easier on my part.... I can always throw some more drywall on there, prime it and paint it anyways..............

Just give me an excuse not to make life easier and rip my walls apart 🙂

Go wireless.

Edit: I am all for running the Cat6, but you might as well run Fiber if you're really trying to get performance. Wireless can usually do just as good and it will save you a lot of cost up front, as well as trouble. There's an apartment behind my house....I never thought once about running Cat5 through the conduit. I just got myself a WRT54G and told my tenants to get some Wireless G USB adapters. Problem solved and it only cost them $23 per system.

I have ulterior motives for wiring the house... Let's put it this way... there won't be any regular telephone jacks left in the house when I'm done. 🙂

Get cordless phones and leave the old wires in the wall. Remove the modular jacks and drywall over the holes. I ran cable for years....so I know how to thread stuff through walls without ripping out drywall. It's a lot easier/cheaper to avoid it whenever possible. 😛

I'm not going wireless... I want wired, and I'm willing to invest the time to do it. So if you guys have some tips on how to thread it thru without destroying my wall (because damn it would be easier), I'd appreciate it 🙂
