Now it's like the top-line Intel dual-cores are cheaper than the AMD's bottom line. We all know how they perform but this seems to be a very, very unusual and aggressive move by Intel. I mean, even I'm temped to buy one and OC the hell out of it..

~$200 for 3.0GHz dual-cores.. and the brand new, top-of-the-line 950 is $335?! What would AMD do to counter? Sure one can think that AMD doesn't need to counter since 3800+ performs better than 940, but I don't think that'll be enough. We're talking about economy here. It'd be great if AMD does a similar (well, one can always hope) price cut, but will AMD be able to do it?

The thing is, if AMD cut the prices, Intel can counter it back by cutting their prices even more - and we know Intel can afford to do so.. Price war, that is.. With the one and the only, and probably most effective weapon that Intel has.. Intel declares a war..

Who will win?

Well there is going to be a new Pentium D 960 being introduced at the end of this month for the price of 530US. So 316US won't be the highest price for the Pentium D Series for very long.

This is why I love to OC. Got my new 805 going at 3.4 Ghz and plan to get it up to 3.6 later when I switch the ram from my other box. Even with the price cuts, I can spend the extra $200 on something else.

Intel needs to get all of their crappy chip inventory out the fvcking door before conroe is rolled out in force. Who in their right mind is going to buy a cheap space heater from intel when they have equivilently priced conroes out there? The early conroe announcement was a double edged sword. It got everyone to wait for conroe instead of buying AMD parts...but it'll also have everyone waiting for conroe instead of buying INTEL parts as well.

I agree with Ed over at overclockers, these price cuts are nice...but unless people were going to be buying these chips anyway, its going to be met with a "who cares?" from most people.

Look at this as supporting the strategy of stopping AMD from selling enthusiast chips rather than selling more P4s. If the announcement of Conroe didn't stop people from buying AMD offerings, then how about cheap Intel fare as food for indecision?

If I had to build a box right now, I'd definitely look at Intel's current chips at these prices. DDR2 compatibility right now, possible overclock of the dirt cheap parts to perform like enthusiast CPUs, inexpensive motherboards, and a possible upgrade path to Conroe.

What's not to like?

Yes, the AMD chips can be overclocked to a higher absolute performance level. But the price/performance ratio just isn't there.

Yeah :). I think I'll be looking to sell my rig (mobo, cpu, ram and possibly my graphics card) when Conroe hits the market.

Intel is probably doing this to move the market to their more cost effective 65 nm based CPU's. I'm sure they also want dual core to be the new defacto standard.

By doing so, AMD has to use up about 2X the silicon producing their own dual cores and they have to do it on older less cost effective 90 nm technology.

What socket type is Conroe supposed to mount to? LGA775? If someone were to buy a mobo today-- would they be able to upgrade to Conroe in current socket w/o bios upgrade?

I hope to buy a S939 Opty-- so I hope AMD does reduce prices... but I can *see* that it may not have to.

Conroe uses LGA 775, but if you buy a motherboard now theres a good chance that its chipset won't support Conroe.

Mobo manufacturers are rushing to make revisions to their Mobos to support conroe. Like the Intel Bad Axe rev 304 and more. They should be here anyday and with the future support of conroe and current prices of Pentium D... I wouldn't even consider AMD.
Imagine, I get a Compatibale Mobo now, get a Pentium D at a fair price... DDR2 alreayd supported and later on all i have to do is pop in a conroe.. and voila.

AMD can't even afford to cut prices on Dual core processors. Not good news.

I think after Intel comes out with Conroe//and Conroe duel core stuff, AMD will start to cut prices like there's no tomorrow. None of their chip can compete in performance so had to be on price.

Yes, but how can they? Their 65nm technology is still several quarters away.

This will be my biggest hurdle to going to a Conroe. Confusing(to me) motherboard chipset choices and changes. I imagine it won't be too hard to figure it out after reading enough threads and motherboard reviews. But still- socket 939/Nf4 was so simple....

AMD not able to survive a pricing war???

Has AMD ever been known to have cheap and fast CPUs in the past??? ;)
There is no worries here. Move along.

To be fair...when AMD offered cheap and fast CPUs...they were also losing money like it was in their company mission statement. Not that I didn't take advantage of the situation!

You forgot the mention the value line price cuts.

Locally the most expensive Celeron D (3,2GHz top model) now costs the same as the second cheapest Sempron (2800+) and the rest of them are even cheaper...

So AMD has the performance lead but are too expensive.

and Intel has less impressive chips but they give the most bang for your buck.

What's happening with the world these days?

So what Intel chip has best bang/buck ? AMD still holds that IMO. And their chips are not too exspensive, just SOME of them APPEAR tp be more exspensive than the Intel counterpart. See posts on 8xx and 9xx Intel chips, I don;t want to repost what others have said.

Survive - yes, however without 65nm technology it'll be very painfull from a profitability standpoiunt.

The Celeron Ds are monsters too, in Xtremesystems a guy had a Celly D benchin at 5 Ghz on air, did 6 Ghz on a vapochill, they're friggin nuts. I think the Cellies are startin to overtake the Semprons, especially after they're overclocked.

Pentium D 930 @ 218$ is a pretty damn good deal, 80$ cheaper than a 3800+ and easy overclock past 4 Ghz

Still --------- Wait for Conroe :)
