Here come the state budget cuts!

Well, my governor Mitt Romney (Ma) is on TV giving his "State of the State" address, and it's not pretty. It's all state budget cuts. That's it. $.02 of every dolar given to towns will be cut. He fired the whole MDC (state parks&rec program). Weee! I hope it's a not a hot summer this year.

Fun stuff! He says he won't raise taxes because it shouldn't hurt the working folk (so says the millionaire). Ah, well, of course he won't raise taxes- that doesn't mean local towns won't raise taxes. Of course they will.

yeah, the feds/states are figuring out that an easy way to cut costs is to stop helping the entity next down on the food chain, make the local city council raise taxes and get voted out of office, etc

everybody seems to be picking up on this angle

Just the aftermath of the 90s boom. Every state raised their spending levels past the level of inflation and now are in shock that when the economy contracts their tax revenue does as well.

I don't think it's any worse in Ca than it is here. 650mil defecit this year.

That said- How can you close all the parks and pools? That's just ridiculous. All these kids this summer with no jobs and nothing to do. If it's a hot summer it's going to come back to haunt him.

It is the only way to solve the problem. Keep pushing the problem down, either the service will not missed or locals will pay for it. Really the way it should be.

Missouri is apparently ready to do something to "combat" their budget problems. Presnetly, the gambling boats have a $500 loss limit per three hours. The word is they are going to completely eliminate the loss limits! Considering the amount of money taken in now, I'm sure this will boost the amounts considerabley, now I just wonder how much more the state will have to pay for the problems it will also cause.

State sponsered gambling is just a bad idea.

Holden? Is that his name? He is an idiot if there ever was one.

Illinois is not much better off, but our new Democrat Governor is starting to impress me.....
😉

Where i live they are closing a hospital that specializes in therapy for people that have had spinal or brain damage, i believe its the foremost hospital in this field...all those people now get tossed out and have no where to go.

I believe they are also threatening to raise taxes or release criminals due to cutbacks for the sheriffs dept.

Yep, that would be him. And yeah, Illinois is much better off in a lot of ways including unemployment benefits, Workers Comp., and insurance as a whole. Almost makes me wish I was back in Chicago, but, the cost of living is low as hell where we're at now so.😉

Classic tactic of threatning to kill basic/popular services to get the go ahead to raise taxes.

That's because services cost money. You want the services, you pay the money. You don't want to pay the amount needed for those services, you don't get them. It's as simple as that. But don't complain to me when roads start falling apart, Medicare can't provide for you in old age, and your kids don't get adequate schooling facilities.

Then be happy and pay more taxes and do nothing to constrain your goverment.

This is exactly what happens when corporations are allowed to use loopholes to evade paying taxes and putting that money into *OMG* the pockets of the execs.

There's an easy way to constrain your government...stop asking so much of them. Politicians, for better or worse, spend money on programs that will get them elected. Don't want higher taxes? Don't ask for them to bear the cost of your medicines once you reach 65. Don't want to pay more? Don't expect to be paid as much as you do for unemployment these days. Legislation to equalize the budget by raising taxes by, say, a half-percent have been voted down in numerous states. The economy hurts states right now as much as it does you. Don't expect the state to give you what you want if you don't want to bear the costs of it. Constraining the government is as easy as not asking so much of them.
