I wonder what the chipset is.

Link.

My guess is it's just a GTXP without a breakout box...same Crystal chip. The GTXP is already 7.1.

Same chip as in nearly all their cards.

7.1 on the GTXP? I've only got 6.1. Guess it's time to update the drivers.

The chip is the same as in the older Fortissimo II, Crystal 4624 chipset. The GTXP sues the Crystal 4630, which is the bigger brother of the 4624.

My sentiments exactly, if there are no games that will support 7.1 then its just all hype and of no use to the general population.

The GTXP's breakout box is awesome, I love mine. Couldn't ask for a better sound card and it has great drivers unlike the Creative cards.

DVD's only support 5.1, games don't even support that for now... Doom3 will be the first!

Hardly, there are 6.1 DVDs out and 7.1 is in the works. Also Doom3 the first with surround? The unreal engine has had it for years, and many other games support it. Morrowind, NWN, even WC Prophecy has surround support.

I saw the Fortissimo III on the shelves of CompUSA on Saturday for $49.99. I had to look twice, but it was definately the III. Here's the link to the card at the CompUSA Web site so you can see if your local store has it in stock: Fotissimo @ CompUSA for $49.99

They should start concentrating more on sound quality and processing power now. Just getting a 5.1 speaker system costs a good bit; I'd imagine that a 7.1 system would be quite a bit more.

Some things to consider would be features to match Aureal's A3d 2.0 and 3.0 - the advanced realtime reflections and occlusions. I'm not sure how the Sensaura technologies compare with these; and I don't know that games that support A3D 2.0 can use the Sensaura programming.
It would also be nice to have equalizers that really work without causing awful distortion. My Aureal Vortex2 based soundcard was great with the equalizer. I think it was a 10-band, and if you'd put the bass to the max, the speakers would simply generate more powerful bass. With my Santa Cruz, moving the bass higher than the default results in distortion. I have to move the higher frequency bands down in volume, then turn up the speakers. Minor inconvience yes, but I'd still prefer to have a fully-functional equalizer.

5.1 support from games is nice ... just played Unreal Tournament for a few hours. I do have to admit that anything over 6.1 sound for games not needed (as I heard no benefits playing UT with a ProMedia 6.1 set up on the GTXP with v3.02 drivers).

However, adding more surround speakers to an HT set up, whether it be an HT set up for your computer or TV is nice. The idea has always been to create a 360 degree sound stage so that sounds can be isolated to specific locations around the listener. If you guys ever have a chance to head down to San Antonio, TX, look for the only place in the world that you can listen to the TMH 10.2 demonstration (yes, TMH... not THX).

7.1 is a waste of money. Yamaha has been using it on their high end receivers since the '90s.

The truth of the matter is that right now we are only getting true discrete 6.1 channel content. Most people don't even like the way it sounds. The only difference between 5.1 and 6.1 is that addition of a rear center channel speaker. Movies like Gladiator, that were among the 1st to use it, suffered less rear channel detail. Then you have to worry about whether it is a discrete 6.1 sound. If it isn't then they are just steeling info from the 2 rear channels and merging it into a center channel. Kinda like the way that Dolby pro-logic first work.

Just buy a good receiver and then some good speakers, the rest is a waste.

That is just one of those features that is implimented for pure marketing purposes. Don't worry about whether your card supports 7.1 or not.
