AMD are not the way to go for a high-end quad-core system.

Get yourself a 45nm Core 2 Quad instead, 4GB of RAM, the WD 640GB hard drive (or 1TB Caviar Black for more size), and consider abandoning the gaming graphics cards for a professional rendering card such as the Quadro FX or FireGL.

a conventional gaming card will work perfectly well, IF the drivers have been
debugged. which takes about a year. therefore, no 4870. make it a 3870.

i run 3DS Max on the C2D system in my sig. i used to run it on the Opteron
system. in my case i have a 7600 GT, which is under-powered for larger
scenes. it works fine with Maya & Max, and with Mental Ray ... i don't use VRay.

I used both a rendering card (Quadro 4 980 XGL) and a gaming card (honestly can't remember which) a while back in 3dsmax R6, and there was an incredible difference when it came to setting up scenes with lots of objects and detail. I myself wouldn't use a gaming card if I got back into rendering...
