HELP

er... uhh.... does that receiver have 8 channel direct input (also called 7.1 analog input)?
It would be a grouping of 8 rca connectors on the back but not the same as pre-outs.

If it has this, then you can just get some 1/8" to RCA adapters and run from a standard 7.1 soundcard to it.

If you want 5.1 or higher from gaming, that's the way to go or you can get a soundcard that encodes DD in real time and send a DD stream to your receiver for decoding via digital. (X-Mysitque or Montego etc)

If you hook up with digital from a card that doesn't do DD encoding, you'll get stereo in games/music (but you can do prologicII or similar on it) and DD from DVD movies and other DD encoded material.

What soundcard to you have?

EDIT: oh, I assumed you meant for a comptuer connection. What do you want to hook up?

"a tv".. what does that mean exactly? 😀

Normally- you aren't gonna hook up the TV to your reciever- you are gonna use the audio outputs on either your DVD, Satellite, Cable Connection, PS2, whatever, to your receiver - and only hook up the video connections to your TV.

The best quality is optical - although the coax connection is also digital and arguably just as good of quality.

not trying to sound like a d!ck, for basically any stuff we can afford, stuff that is cheaper than say $10,000 a ht setup, optical=coax. above that i think there are minute differences but my ears could never pick it up and my wallet could never afford that type of stuff. that is where you get into xlr connections and stuff like that.

Looks like it's been covered already by ELTorrente....

Didn't your HTIB come with a manual? The usually have diagrams for setup.

Do you have a cable box or something like that?

i have an onkyo home theater and i am using an optical cable from the dvd to the main unit and i can tell a difference between the optical and the others....its much crisper.....I love this setup, rocks the house windows🙂

bob is talking about digital optical vs digital coaxial (not digital optical vs analog RCA)

I actually haven't done any testing, and I probably should, but I doubt I'd be able to tell any difference between optical or coax on my setup either (much below bob's $10k mark me mentioned too 😉)
