HELP!

When:
happened maybe 3 days ago. not sure what caused it but i just now realized it effects everything but firefox however at some point i did use blackviper.com to hack down some "uneeded" services. I also used TweakVI. I tweaked firefox default internet settings to "cable" mode but firefox works fine..faster even since i tweaked it.

Problem: nothing except Firefox can access internet. not WU, IE nor not any applications...etc.
Firefox works and loads sites,downloads/uploads just fine.

Tried: i uninstalled comodo firewall. problem still exists.

Notes: i have no router, no hardware firewall of any kind. right now i'm completely naked trying to figure this out. its driving me nuts.

how can only one Browser access internet fine while nothing else can?
has to be a specific service i disabled?

thanks in advance

well first step is 1) restore your backup of your settings that you saved before doing the blackviper settings.
or if you didnt do that, may have to do a system restore to a day before you did those, if that is turned off, you will have to manually turn it all back on

2) ignore the blackviper stuff. personally i have not found it adds any performance to the machine, if you want to turn the stuff off be sure you know exactly what that service does before turning off

ok, i reverted all the services back to normal by useing the default services .reg file and still notta. so its not the services causing the problems
also dahak, i did know what i was doing, i mean i've used the site for years for various installs and knew what the services were, it was just the first time i used bk's .reg file to do them and i considered maybe i accidentally lost focus and removed an important service...but no
i also reverted my tweakvi internet settings back to orignal...nothing
hard to say exactly when it occured, but i only noticed a couple of apps unable to connect roughly 3 or 4 days ago.

with IE i noticed every website i enter, the connection at the bottom ip address says connecting to 10.1.1.1

@anonymouseuser: i dont understand exactly. could you clarify?
firefox always works great, so what you mean doesnt immediatly?

@hyperblaze: i clicked on ipconfig...i'm on vista btw. nothing happened
like i said i'm on vista and dont know how to ping anyone in command console
i clicked on networking and appears to be working, its showing me connected to internet.

here is what my host file says, appears normal to me.

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

with IE i noticed every website i enter, the connection at the bottom ip address says connecting to 10.1.1.1

This has to be a DNS issue. "10.1.1.1" is most likely your gateway (modem/router), with your gateway set as the DNS server. It sounds like you're querying your gateway for DNS but not getting a response.

firefox always works great, so what you mean doesnt immediatly?

I mean it doesn't reset the DNS settings immediately, whereas your system does. However, it should be using your default gateway by now, so I don't know how it's getting it's DNS addresses currently.

is your router a dlink or linksys router? or any soho type of router? try rebooting your router and your cable modem by powering them down (router first then modem) wait a minute, then power up your modem. wait until all link lights are blinking (assuming if you have a motorola surfboard modem) then power up the router.

do all of this while your computer is shut off. once everything has been brought online, make sure youve got an ip iddress by going to command prompt and type the following

1. ipconfig /all hit enter. if you have an ip then type the following.

2. ipconfig /flushdns hit enter, then type

3. ipconfig /registerdns

4. if you do not have an ip then type the following,

5. try going to a website with IE.

6. ipconfig /renew and go back to 1

hope that helps.

also,

check your services and make sure you did not have the DNS client service accidentally turned off.

dns client is running. i dont have a router but reset my modem
ipconfig after pressing enter shows IPV6,IPV4,subnet,default gatway all shows IP address numbers

also says below that
says local area connector's 6,7,9 all say the same thing "media state...: media disconnected, connection-specific dns suffix

it didnt resolve the problem however. might be forced to reformat which sucks cause i just installed vista last sunday.

what addresses are you being given?

before trying to reformat, uninstall the bic drivers and reinstall them. maybe look for updated ones onthe mfr site

i reinstalled, fixed the issue, just wish i knew what caused it but thanks for the attempted help everyone, this looks like a very helpful forum
