A girl I know had setup a joint bank account with her ex-fiance. The account is setup at her ex?s naval base in San Diego. They since have broken off the engagement about 10 months ago, and they account is still there. She can?t fly out to San Diego to take the money out b/c she can?t get on base without him. Thing is he has access to the account since he is on base and can take the money out willingly.

She has no desire to go to San Diego and see him, and is more than willing to take the loss of money than see him again. I can fully understand why she doesn?t want to see him again, so basically there is no negotiation on her going to San Diego.

What im trying to find out is if there is anything she can do from here in NY? Her ex won?t fax her any information, and the fact that this bank is navy run she has her hands are tied. This isn?t some national bank where she can go in to a branch out here. What can she do? I mean its not some life or death situation since she is ok with chalking this one up in the lesson learned column, but I?d like to help her and was hoping someone here could help me do that.

It should just be a credit union. She may be able to call them and request an ATM card and just withdraw the cash that way or request they issue a check to her for the amount that is hers. This is assuming of course that the ex has not already cleared out the account. On a joint account it is first come first served.

No matter which credit union it is, it is not run by the Navy.

Seeing as how it's a credit union with a branch on San Diego and she can't get on base, I'm going to make a guess that it might be more accurate to say that he set up an account making her the joint owner.

What does she have? Does she not have an ATM card? Does she have any checks? Does she know the account number? Does she know which credit union it is?

No ATM, no checks, i think she knows the account #, and she knows which union it is. Im still verifying that its this particular one.
