Help! WPA causes wireless connection to frequently drop out.

I am trying to establish a stable wireless connection between my Dell laptop and my new FIOS router.

Before FIOS, I had a stable WPA connection with this laptop and my DI-624 router. But with the new FIOS router, my connection seems to drop out about once a minute or so when I use WPA-PSK. I get a pretty stable connection when using WEP, but obviously I don't want to rely on that for security.

I've tried resetting the router, powercycling, etc. I've of course verifed that my WPA keys match. I've also tried disabling 802.11a on my laptop. I've tried disabling the group key update function on the router, and toggled between TKIP and AES. I've tried assigning different channels. Nothing helps. It's also not cordless interference (DECT 6 phones).

One clue - under the WLAN card utility, connection status reads "Connected" when I'm using WEP. However, when I use WPA it says "Authenticating" and never goes to "Connected." Despite that, it does give me internet access for a minute before the wireless drops out.

I did try connecting my DI-624 to the FIOS router to use its radio feature, and I did get a stable WPA connection between the D-link and my laptop. So this problem definitly has something to do with how the FIOS router handles WPA. I just don't know what other settings to play with.

You'll need to update/patch XP if you are using windows zero config. Try with the actual wireless card utility. Windows zero config is notoriously flaky, especially with WPA.

Or, use your DI-624 as an Access point and disable the FIOS Wireless.

Thanks spidey - I am using the Dell utility for config, not windows.

I suppose I could permanently use the D-link as my access point, but I'd rather like to avoid the additional clutter/power consumption if I can help it.
