HELP! Won't boot with 2x512mb. Defective DIMM slot?

I'm trying to put together a new system and can't get both sticks of CorsairXMX DDR400MHz 3200CL2 to post. System just keeps trying to reboot, or if I'm lucky it will post the video bios and CPU speed, but then hangs right before memory check and I have to cut the power on the supply to restart. System boots with either stick in DIMM slot 1 no problem, but curiously won't boot with one stick in DIMM slot 2 or 3. Shouldn't this work?

I've tried different timing and speed settings in BIOS (F1 and F2d for Gigabyte K8NS-Pro) with CMOS set to halt on 'no errors', swapped video cards, etc to rule out conflicts, but nothing seems to work. Can't decide whether to RMA board or RAM.

Any ideas?

did you try putting both ram sticks in slot 2 & 3 and leaving slot 1 empty?

Yep - I tried 1&2, 2&3, 1&3 - same problem system constantly tries to reboot or hangs just before memory check.

could be that the memory isn;t matched. Even if they were packaged together it could be that you have two unmatched sticks. Just a thought

Are you attempting dual channel? Also have you checked the slots physically? Dust or damage in slots 2 or 3 could stop both from working.
