Help with Xp-90 and AS5.

I just finished reading the install guide for the xp-90 and I am confused. In the guide it states that to remove the stock RM I should use nail polish remover. I just removed the screws on the stock hm and gently pulled it and it came right off ( I have an epox 9NPA). It seemed there was no glue holding it on at all. Did I do something wrong? Do I have to take the metal backplate off the back of mobo?

With the stock HM off, do I just install the xp-90 hm with the two screws?

Also, with applying AS5 to a A64 (opteron), do I just place a small grain sized portion to the chip and then put the xp-90 on? Should I spread the stuff around the chip to cover the whole thing? Should I also apply it to the base of the Xp-90 too?

I know this stuff is posted in one place or another, but I just wanted to confirm. It has been ahile since the lasttime I built a computer.

Thanks!

"hm"?

I just put a bit in the middle and let the compression squeeze it out. I twist it a bit (after seating) for good measure.

I believe the hm is the plastic bracket for the heatsink...

The instuctions for the xp-90 refer to it as the hm.

thanks

For applying AS5 to the chip, only apply it to one surface (CPU). Don't apply too much and there's no need to spread it around. Just center a grain and a half of rice sized bit of AS5 on the CPU and then let the force of the CPU spread the AS5 out. Applying too much will end up sticking your CPU to the heatsink and you'll have a very hard time getting it off without ripping out the CPU as well.

My installation sheet calls it "RM" (retention module, I guess).

Haha, the topic looked like "Help with XP-90 and ASS"

Anyway, there's really no "right" way to do it. I find the best way for me is to squeeze a rice sized amount onto the middle, put your finger in a clean plastic bag like a condom, then spread it around with your protected finger. :p Don't apply it to the base of the XP-90, that would be too much. Yes, there is a "too little" and "too much" though.

Also, the XP-90 should come with its own bracket which you need to attach to the mobo. Remove the one that's already on the mobo (and that usually includes the backplate) and attach the XP-90 bracket using all the screws and whatnot that came with it.

No need to remove any backplate on the 9npa. Well, at least, I didn't. I just unscrewed the stock retention bracket and screwed on the one that came with the xp-90.
