Hi all,
I consider myself fairly computer savvy, but wireless internet connections and firewalls confuse me. I have a Netgear MR814 wireless router. Until recently, the two computers in our house were in close proximity, so I was able to use regular ethernet cables to connect them directly to the router. Now, my computer is in a separate room so a wireless solution was necessary. So, I went out and bought a D-Link wireless PCI adapter. After a bit of trial and error, I've got it working and I can access the internet. I'm having a couple of problems though.
First off, how do I know that my connection is secured by the firewall? The reason I ask is because after establishing the wireless connection, I sometimes get a message that says something like "this network may not be secure, do you still want to connect to it?" Then it says something about no WEP being defined or something like that. Can someone explain this to me please? Is my connection secure? If not, what do I need to do to make it secure?
Secondly, when I power down the computer and start it back up, the wireless connection won't work. This happens everytime I reboot. I end up having to open network connections and mess with a few settings before it finally seems to kick in. This sometimes takes a reboot or two and is quite annoying. Is there a way to avoid this other than leaving the computer on all the time?
Thanks for your help.
