help with windows xp pro networking

i want to share files and printers between my notebook and desktop , i tryed runing the home network setup on both computer but i still can not see the other computer in network places , both are in the workgroup home1 both have windows xp pro installed , connected through a hub , do i need to change some network settings or set up netbios like with windows 98 ? t
