Help with Windows XP and Dell 4300 (hangs after start-up)

Hey guys,

I have a question. But let me pre-empt it with a comment. I ran across this same problem last time I installed windows on this machine, and fixed it, but can't remember how...I just know it is possible.

I recently took my wife's computer and stuck it in the garage as she got a laptop. It's nice to have one down there for when I'm working on the cars and I need some info.

Anyway, It's a Dell Dimenstion 4300 with a 1.6 P4. The only cards in it are a GF2GTS and a Belkin wireless card.

I just did a fresh install of windows (with no problems), and installed the drivers for those two cards. Windows found drivers for everthing else.

Anyway, when I boot up the computer, the bar goes by about 6 or 7 times, then it starts, and when the desktop is up, if I try to open 'My Computer', any real tasks, or look into the properties of 'my computer' it hangs for a good minute or so, then is usable (albeit slow).

Any ideas on a fix? I checked the IRQs and nothing is redundant. I wish I could remember how I fixed it last time, as it worked flawlessly after that.

Well, I'm not sure what did it, but...

I downloaded the chipset drivers from Dell. They wouldn't install. Got a pop-up message saying that my current operating system didn't need the .inf or something. So I went to intel and downloaded them in a newer version and they installed fine.

Didn't seem to help much...

Bootvis...nadda

Defrag...well, never hurts.

Updated BIOS from A02 to A06....didn't help.

Turned off some services, such as the Background Intelligent Transfer, and that actually helped, but it was still slow as balls.

Went into the weany bios that Dell gives, and turned on UDMA. Can't believe i missed that. Boy, what a difference.

Seems to be working well now!
