Help with Windows XP 64-bit audio issues

I just installed XP 64 last night, and I have everything working except the sound. Initially I had a Soundblaster Live! Platinum card in there. I found some preview xp 64 drivers from creative's website and installed them, but the sound wouldn't work after the drivers were installed and a lot of the sound features were missing too.

I then tried using the soundcard that came with my Chaintech VNF-250 motherboard. When I tried to install the drivers for this, it wouldn't recognize the card was even in there. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could try to get any type of sound working???

What do you mean by proper 64 it chipset drivers? I installed the MB drivers that were on the cd, but that was it. Should there be 64 bit chipset drivers for the vnf-250 motherboard???

Ok, I have made some progress but there is still one problem. I found the Nvidia Nforce 64-bit chipset drivers that included a 64-bit AC'97 codec, which was compatible with my onboard 5.1 sound card. The sound card has a SPDIF out port, a center/bass port and a left/right port. My speakers are the Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500, which has a receiver with various inputs.

I was able to get audio out of a music cd playing from WMP. However, I can't get mp3s to play from winamp nor any other windows sounds. It could have something to do with the way the sound card is connected to the receiver or perhaps it is some software setting that needs to be changed. In any case I consider myself an audio novice, so any ideas would help. Thanks.

Well that's all beta stuff so I wouldn't expect it to work too well yet. Wait for everything to be released in a mature form before sweating too much over it being flaky.

I understand that it's still in beta, but the problem I am now having seems to be some connection/setting issue. Basically, I just need to know what could cause cd audio to work, but sound from sotware such as winamp to not work.

Are you still using a cable from the CD drive for the audio?

Yes, I have two cables running from my two cd drives to the soundcard.

That's probably why you are still getting CD audio then. You are using the analog signal.

It's actually been a long time since the cables were necessary. CD and DVD drives have supported digital audio over the IDE cable for a long time now, making those audio cables unnecessary. It's been years since I have used one.

If you look in device manager under the properties of your CD or DVD drives, you should see a checkbox for turning on digital audio. If you have that option available, then you don't need those cables to hear your CD's.
