I accidentily changed the wrong service from "Automatic" to "Manual", and now my keyboard and mouse don't work! 😱 How can I get back into windows and set it to auto, or start the service again? Does NT4 have some kind of safe mode?

Thanks in Advance, micron

When booting, there is an option for last know good configuration.

The only problem with that, is that NT might not see that your current config is bad, since it boots with out error. 🙁

That is about all I can help. Good luck.

have you tried using your tab key and the space bar and all that to navigatte through your system?

You might want to try booting and then selecting "Last Known Good" for the option as it's going through it's thing...

I tried that. 🙁

I disabled the keyboard/mouse service, so I can't do anything... 🙁🙁

I guess I'll have to re-install, I didn't have a chance to get any data on it yet anyway.

Reboot, press f8, select vga mode (safe mode for nt) make repairs to services. reboot normally.

If you have modified the boot.ini to remove these modes your up the creek so to speak, unless you left the file system as fat.
If you left it fat, boot with a floppy- then edit boot.ini to re-add f8 functions.

Good luck 🙂

Can you get into safe mode? There should be an option when the computer boots right after it shows the BIOS screen.

Edit: GunDog beat me to it, and even offered a better explanation that I ever could have hoped for.

I'll try that Monday morning (it's an office machine.)! Thanks! 🙂

Um.... folks, there is no F8 or safe mode options under Windows NT 4.0. Micron, be careful who you listen to!

Sounds to me like you disabled the i8042prt.sys device driver, which is the PS/2 keyboard/mouse port driver.

If the machine boots, go to another machine on the network, start regedt32, connect to this machine's registry, change HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Start back to 1.

If you can't do that, boot to the windows 2000/xp recovery console (yes, on an NT4 machine), log on and type:

ENABLE I8042PRT SERVICE_SYSTEM_START

Reboot and use your mouse and keyboard once again! 🙂

Safe Mode under Win2K/XP is *nothing at all* like booting to VGA mode in Windows NT 4.0.
