My windows install on my hard drive got totally FURBAR'd and I can no longer boot from that drive. There are a few files from my desktop on that OS that I would like to reclaim if at all possible as there are several school projects on there.

I have been told that using a Linux boot CD you should be able to access most of the data. True to a point but when I try to access items on the desktop of my previous Windows profile, the folder shows empty. I'm not getting any access rights errors but my suspicion is that I am being denied access. Does anyone know how to get around this?

Gives you a bootable Windows CD with full access to Windows tools and your NTFS drives. If your hard drive is failing, you may be out of luck retrieving those files, however.

You might be able to put it in as a slave drive in another computer and get those items off. You can also try a windows based bootcd like BartPE. They may have a better chance of seeing the data.

Wow, quick responses guys, thanks! Will this solve the problem of access rights to that folder though? It doesn't really say. I was hoping by using Linux it would disregard Windoze security parameters. I'm able to access most every other folder on the drive.

Well to be honest, we are not sure it is a rights access issue. I would try this before going further.
