so i had asked for some help a few weeks ago and wasn't really getting anywhere, so i returned the computer thinking it was faulty and got a new one. but i'm still having the same problem.

the problem is that I cannot access certain websites, regardless of the browser, and I have updated flash. I cannot access hotmail, or any windows live login for that matter. i also cannot access most of the games on facebook, but some games will work.

I am using a HP 2000-219DX notebook with an AMD Dual core e-350 1.6Ghz with windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

this is a computer for my mother and father, my mother really likes her facebook games - namely lexulous and my dad likes to be able to access his email.

everything else about the computer seems to work fine

now, if i do a clean install and do not install the windows updates, all these things work perfectly fine, but as soon as the updates install, hotmail doesn't work and the games on lexulous don't work.

any ideas on how to fix this? i have had this problem on two computers now, so i'm thinking its a windows 7 issue as it hasn't been a problem on XP or Mac Os on the same network.

1. disable ipv6 on the network adapter.
2. disable flow control if its ethernet adapter.
3. make sure you run malwarebytes or spybot S&D and you are not pwned.
4. set your dns to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 (google dns)

#1 gets so many people with windows 7 and vista

i almost thought it worked, and then it didn't. i changed the dns and disabled the ipv6, nothing changed, i disabled flow control and all of a sudden hotmail loaded and i thought, yes, its fixed,

but i logged out of hotmail, tried it a second time and i couldn't do it.

this makes no sense, but thanks emulex, it gave me something to try.

here is another oddity, if i type in hotmail.com, nothing loads, but i can type in login.live.com and i get the login page and i can login and view my account overview, but i cannot view my mail.

this is just the stupidest thing i have ever seen, and it was the same on both computers, i don't get it. i have had no problems like this with any other operating system.

What security software are you running on the machine (i.e. anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall, etc)? Have you tried to install another browser (Chrome seems to work very well with Facebook applications)?

When you are doing Windows updates after a fresh install, are you installing just updates, or are you installing any drivers it suggests?

Finally, was the replacement computer the same brand/model as the one you replaced?

in the CMD prompt, type nslookup hotmail.com and copy the output.

kme@linux-6bgf:~> nslookup hotmail.com
Server: 192.168.10.1
Address: 192.168.10.1#53

Try to do this.

WinSock and TCP/IP Refresh.

Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.

Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run a Command Prompt as an Administrator. Allow elevation.

Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt , and then press the Enter key.

Do the same process for refreshing the TCP/IP just replace the typed command with.

netsh interface ipv4 reset
press Enter

netsh interface ipv6 reset press Enter

ipconfig /flushdns press Enter

Restart your Computer.
===========

Could be that after the Update the Software Firewall might be of need for re-adjustment too.

net stop dnscache
^^ as admin in dos prompt
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

btw:
kme@linux-6bgf:~> nslookup hotmail.com
Server: 192.168.10.1
Address: 192.168.10.1#53

^^ means you didn't set the dns as i told you.

check eventvwr system or app log for event 4226 (tcp/ip sockets used up).

turn off p2p apps on the pc

thanks emulex, i actually used a different dns setting and it seems to work now, i used 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2. and everything seems to work. i had worked through most of the suggestions from everyone else as well and it didn't seem to do anything, thank you though, this has been making me crazy, i'm just glad it all works now.

It is probably not something you did. Since it happened on two identical computers, it more than likely resulted from a mis-configuration in the factory image put on the machine.

One of my neighbors had a similar issue with an HP last year - she returned the laptop to HP twice before finally bringing the 2nd replacement over to me so we could work out what was wrong. In her case, the factory image was mis-configured to cause Norton Firewall and Windows firewall to be active at the same time - they were interfering with each other and partially blocking network connectivity. The problem recurred when we restored the machine to the factory image, so it is something she will have to remember to fix in the future anytime she does a restore.

thanks for the tip, luckily, my mother will not be trying to reset anything, but i will let my brother and sister know what to do just in case.
