Help With Windows 2000 and Networking

I have one computer with Windows 2000 and one Computer with Windows 98. I'm trying to get my network back working again, I just install Windows 2000 on one to try it out, and I'm having problems. My computer with Windows 2000 can see the other one fine. The one with 98 keeps asking me for a password when I try to access the one with 2000. I put in the password and it doesn't let me access it. Both computers have passwords, but the one with 2000 can access the one with 98 not even having to use a password. It doesn't even ask for one. Now the computer with 2000 is logging in under administrator login. Could that be a problem? Do you have to have another login for it to work? Any help would be VERY much appreciated.

what you said wasnt very clear, but, try creating a new local account in the Win2k computer, and give it permissions to acces the drives or folders you want... make it cleared and i can help you out better

Basicly the problem is my computer with Windows 98 can't access the HD on the computer with Windows 2000. It keeps asking me for a password, but the one I put in doesn't work. The computer with Windows 2000 though can access the HD on the one with 98 and not even need a password. Plus I can get my Sygate to work right, I'm guessing it's because the network isn't working right. It's late and I need to work early in the morning. I'll try to explain further tommorow. In the mean time, anyone that can make sense of this or can give me a simple HOW-TO on networking with Windows 2000 would be greatly appreciated.

Let me see if I can break this down for you. Windows 2000 has security, well more than windows 98 at any rate. When you try to access anything on a Windows 2000 computer it is going to look at who you are logged in as there on your local machine and then compare that with its own user lists. Since it can't find you in its windows 2000 users it will then try to give you access as a guest user. Usually this account is disabled, which is a good thing. You need to remember what you log onto the windows 98 computer with (both your username and password) and then leave that computer and go to the windows 2000 computer. Log on as your administrator account. Click on the Start button then select Settings, then Control Panel, then Users and Passwords. Click on Add, then enter the username from your windows 98 logon. The stuff underneath the username isn't important, but fill it in anyways. Click Next then insert your password from the 98 machine. You should be done. Do this for any other users/computers that you want to have access to your Windows 2000 computer.

If you get ticked off that this wasn't that easy, its ok. Most people have more problems with networking than you do. Once you get it working though its hard to look at windows 98 the same way again. The only time I have to touch a windows 98 box is at work, and I am so glad that I don't have to do it that often.

I've got Windows 2000 installed on both computers now and have my network back working again. 😀 Now I have all these Windows 2000 updates to get. Thanks for the help. 🙂
