ive got a win95 computer on a network with 2 XP computers.

there are shared folders on both XP computers.

the win95 computer can access the shared folders on one computer just fine, when i click on the other XP computer, it says

Computer is not accessible
The Device does not exist on the network

what could possibly be different on that one computer? its got a brand new fresh installation of WinXP Pro + Sp1. no passwords are set on anything... theres no admin password and theres only one user with no password. the guest account doesnt have a red x

the computer that works is running WinXP Pro w/o SP1

both XP computers can access shared folders on the Win95 computer just fine

whats going on?

i even tried making a login on the XP computer with a password and logging into the Win95 computer with the same login and password, an it still gives me the same error

was there something that changed in SP1 that could be affecting this?

Hmmmmm....

At home I've got 3 Win98SE machines, a Win2K Server and a WinXP Pro machine w/SP1. All can access each other. I definetly had to setup dupe accounts and passwords to get it to work.

So, I don't think SP1 should be the problem. What network protocols are you running? TCP/IP and NetBUI on Win95 and TCP/IP on XP? I can only take a long shot guess that maybe the Win95 client is trying to use NetBUI while the XP box is only TCP/IP.

TCP and NetBeui are installed on both machines

on making accounts... i didnt have to make any special accounts to be able to access the shared folders on WinXP (without SP1) and that still works fine. i tried making an account for WinXP (with SP1) but it still wont work

i would be willing to bet that my problem has something to do with the accounts, and that XP became more picky about accounts when going from initial release to SP1. so the question is, what am i doing wrong? i created an account on XP computer, login to Windows Networking on Win95 computer using same login/pw, and make sure folder is shared and that name has access. still same problem

hmm. i notice when u go to sharing in WinXP Pro and try to add a new user, there is a place where u can specify the location of the user. however, when i click on it, the only location available is the computer im on... i have a feeling that might be it...?

this is definitely an SP1 issue. on my home network all my computers use Win XP Pro. before SP1 i could share files/folders between all of them without any hassle at all. just make shared folder an all the other computers would be able to grab stuff without any setup

now ive installed SP1a on all of them, and shared folders show up, but it always asks me for a login/password (for some reason for some computers it doesnt give me choice for login, it is set as Guest and there is no way to change it, its greyed out). so anyway, it seems SP1a is much more "secure" and picky about how you setup sharing, and ancient Win95 is going to have trouble coping with it even more so

having run into this problem on two networks now, i cant be the only one who has had this problem. any ideas?
