The Problem : Love the Xp interface but I am having big time problems with win xp and ping times. Also of note was the problem of sound card installation.

System specs : Asus A7V333 w/ Raid
AMD 2200+
DDR 400mhz 512 ram (ocsystem brand CL2/cl2),
ATI Radeon 8500 Retail
Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 sound card
Two Matrox 7200 RPM HD striped / Raid 0

Restating the problem more specifically: I am an avid gamer, and hence I like to get as much speed as I can, I don't overclock anything since I really dont think it is worth making a fast system unstable. When I boot my computer, everything starts up fine, once in a while I get the hour glass as if win XP is looking for a long lost son, then it remembers it is an operating systems and gets back to the task at hand. My issue is when I log into say Warcraft 3 or Ultima Online, I am able to play happily for about 3 to 5 minutes, then all of a sudden I hit major lag! I am on a cable modem and from using other computers in my house I have confirmed that the connection is not part of the problem. Now before I get a bunch of responses I want to clarify everything. I am a dentist by profesion, but also an avid computer guru of a sort. (I am almost finished with a computer science degree, and I have been building computers as a hobby for about 8 years now). I am very familar with the bios and for the most part I have left the bios alone. Didn't even tweak the memory timing for the Cas 2 ram!
Diagnosis ??? Not quite clear, however this is what I have tried. 1) I have tried 3 different brands of network cards, figuring that the high ping time could be a driver issue with a particular nic. No much improvement there. Settled on the Netgear 311, only because it was the last one I tested. All tests were with fresh install of Win XP professional. 2) I noticed that the sound card was also causing my system problems. Started out with a Soundblaster Live 5.1, which worked fine before I upgraded my Motherboard. Yes the onboard sound is disabled on MB via jumper. Upgraded to Soundblaster Audigy OEM, pretty much was a driver disaster. I could not get any of the new drivers on Creative Labs web site to install. Each resulted in blue screen of death! Sent email to them and they never responded! Personal recomendations are don't buy Soundblaster because they are not good with support. (not to mention they dont even have a 1-800 number, they want you to pay long distance! So I went with Hercules newest the Fortissimo III. It installed ok but sound cuts out here and there, usually just for a second then it returns to normal. Hence I believe that my problem is with the sound card and that it is responsible for causing my high ping times. Technical support from Powerlink stated that Win Xp might be looking for something and that is causing the delay on data being sent and recieved on nic. I have gotten all the latest drivers I could for my hardware, but I am a bit stumped because of the inconsitancy of my system! Sometimes it runs great for a day or two then it hits the crapper! I am pretty certain I dont have any viruses, and I am pretty certain that the hardware is all working properly, drivers might be an issue but I do not believe there are any defective components on board.
If anyone has any idea as to what the hell I can do to correct my problem please help me out! Thanks in advance!

Hmmm for one you have an open connection where your subject to ip scans, hackers, trojans etc unless your running some kind of firewall protection , either the built in one for XP or a standalone one such as ZoneAlarm or BlackIce.

Also there is a possibility that you have a lot of spyware tuck away in your system without you knowing , luckily there is a nice little program that will sift out all those unwanted files on your pc called Ad Aware , you can download it Here.

Also if you don't have one go and get yourself a good AntiVirus program such as Norton .
