Help with Win ME / Hardware conflict

I just loaded ME onto my clone laptop, and everything works except that damn exclamation point on my secondary IDE controller. It's a Opti Viper Dual PCI controller, and the dual and primary are both working, and the secondary controller is working fine in the BIOS. I checked it on Microsoft's site and it listed it as compatible with Win ME. My system is all hosed because of it: 30 minutes to boot!!!, and of course, my cdrom is attached to the secondary cont. Is their anything I can do other than setting my cdrom as a slave on the primary cont???
