Help with wifi configuration/setup for home

To start off let me explain my house. It is the size of a 3 story
townhouse but it actually has 5 floors, they aren't straight up I
guess. The walls and floors are concrete so signal seems to be an
issue for wifi connectivity. Right now my configuration is as follows:

Fritzbox 7390 - DSL Modem/router/N and G wifi located on 3rd floor
WRT160N - WAP/wired router in basement connected to Fritz box via G
wifi and wired to PC and printer as well as a LAN over*Powerline
LAN over power line - only connected to Xbox at the moment on3rd floor
to stream media from PC

I also have an Apple tv 2g on the 5th floor connected via fritz N wifi
so I can stream iTunes media to a tv. The connection to the apple tv
worked for a few days but now it seems to fail all the time. I tried
streaming media to the Xbox as well as a PS3 over wireless but it
always times out, that I why I am trying the LAN over power. I also
tried sing a E3000 as a WAP but couldn't seem to get DDWRT to
cooperate so it isn't being used right now.

Have you considered running wired connections through the house? Wireless is convenient and cheaper in most cases, but I get the impression that this has been neither of those things for you so far. Perhaps get someone to run wire up to the 5th floor for an access point to cover most of your streaming needs? I would run wire to the basement, too.

Actually yes I was debatin that but I don't think that will be a cheap option, even though I would love to be able to do it. Since all the walls are concrete putting the breakout boxes in will be a little difficult. I also don't know how I would go about routing it between the floors. I was debating about Doing it on the outside through windows but the landlord would have a field day with that. Germans are particular about what goes on the outside of the house.

As of right now I am looking into using WDS and WAPs/range extenders for the basement and the master bedroom, but that will depend on price. I know they have some here locally, but the question will be is how well they will work. I may end up getting 1 to test with and then go from there.

Under this circumstances the best is to run few wires to additional Wireless Router acting as an Access point with a switch.

Or use few Wireless Routers that can act as Wireless Bridges to the locations of the remote components and than plug with a wire the devices to the bridges.

WDS, Repeater, etc. lose 1/2 of the bandwidth at every hop and are not reliable in an environment like yours.

So basically continue doing what I've even doing with the WRT160N and use it as a wireless bridge. Only problem is when I tried to stream media to either the PS3 or Xbox it would not work, usually end up timing out. I wonder if it would work better if I were to run cat 5/6 to the consoles from the fritzbox since its in the same room. I guess I will give that a try and then see if I can find another router that I can flash to support wireless bridging.

Thank you

There is a lot of in between good method, for short runs there are options to conceal nicely cables.

E.g., I have a room that the reception is Bad, but outside at the hallway it is Good.

So I placed a $30 Asus as a bridge in the hallway and laid from it a 10' cable into the room plugged into a Roku XS. This way I get nice solid TV Roku streams.
