guys i need some help here...

two days ago, my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 20 GB drive went nuts on me. windows XP Pro reported that a "serious error has occured and that a report must be sent to microsoft". naturally, i didn't send the info, but i investigated the "serious error". i noticed that my system was very sluggish, like opening windows explorer took about 3 minutes and my HD LED was constantly lit up. the boot up of WinXP took very long (about 4 minutes) too.

i went to the command prompt and entered "D:" (i have a C: for the Windows XP system stuff and D: for everything else) and i got an error message: "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" or something. i tried to format D: but it said that Sector 0 was bad or something and couldn't format it. however, internet explorer and my e-mail (whose data files were in C🙂 worked fine. i brought up the properties window of the d: partition in device manager and it said that the file type was RAW, there was no volume label, and maximum space and free space and used space all read 0 bytes.

i booted from a floppy and tried to fdisk, but it said that "the current fixed disk could not be accessed". a DIR of C: was fine, but anything involving d: took some time. i scan disked with surface scan C: and D: but it said that there was no problem at all with either partition. a FORMAT of d: from the boot disk failed.

what could be the problem? i'm sure it's my hard disk... but is it still recoverable? or do i have to get myself a new one? please help me... thanks!

I strongly suggest re-formatting into ONE partition and going from there.. That should let you know whether it was hardware or YOU (ie. how you setup the TWO partitions).. 🙂

the problem is that i couldn't format d: at all... nor could i fdisk.

and the weird thing is that that computer has been running well (with 2 partitions and all) since Dec. 2000...

Yep, bacillus is right. Powermax will tell you if your drive is bad or not. That should definately be your first step.

Just had to do it myself.

i think powermax was able to fix it... it failed the 90-sec test the first time but passed it and the more comprehensive tests after i ran the advanced test/fix...

thanks guys!
