Help with website - recommendation for forum?

What are my best options for including a forum into my website, free to the public, is also something I won't have to buy or license? My only option at this point is create one using Frontpage's wizard, and customize it probably in under 30 minutes. Or, spend the next 6 months trying to code one myself using ASP and Perl (which I don't know yet).

Suggestions?

FrontPage will build one of those huh?? I did not know that, I haven't used that program for five or so years now...

Ive heard good things about phpbb, but also check phpnuke and scoop (scoop.kuro5hin.org). scoop is perl based and the others are php based.

I don't think Frontpage can create a BB system 😉

If you must have a free one you can try YaBB, Ikonboard, Snitz, or phpBB.

Keep in mind that these are free therefore they all have their fair share of problems. If you think you will have a fairly active board I highly suggest you don't use one of the free ones. They all seem to "self-distruct" under heavy loads.

If you can afford to pay some money I would suggest you try Fusetalk, vBulletin, or UBB.

Both slashcode and scoop seem to do fine under high loads, unless of course slashdot is considered a small website 😉

Yea frontpage 2000 can build a "discussion web" based on webbot components. It works, I've had to use it before and people were using it. I'm not quite ready to pay money for one because of the low volume of usage I'm expecting...

thanks everyone for the links, I'll try them out
