Help with watching Amazon Prime in HD on PC

Hey all, not sure if this is the right forum to put this in, but...

I can't seem to watch HD content from Amazon Prime. It says I don't have a compatible HDCP setup.

I'm running Win 7, with an HP w2007 20" LCD connected via DVI to a ATI Radeon HD 5850 video card.

The resolution for my monitor is 1680x1050, so I know it can't do 1080p, however, should I be able to watch 720p at least?

Is there a reason why my set up is not HDCP? Any help is appreciated it.

Thanks!

Problem is DVI, only way to get around it AFAIK is analog (VGA). That or buy all new devices with HDCP. I have the same problem (w/ DVI), but I have a CRT so it doesn't really matter.

I'm not so sure about that.

The W2007 has HDCP-compliant DVI input:

Supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) to prevent transmission of non-encrypted high definition content

Source

The 5850 has HDCP-compliant DVI output:

Integrated dual-link DVI output with HDCP

Source (under the "Specs" tab)

As far as I know, all DVI cables support HDCP. I don't think hardware is the problem...

Edit - Also, try disabling Silverlight.

I'll admit to being wrong...last I checked DVI was not HDCP compliant and I've never gotten DVI to pass HDCP.

I do wonder if there is incompatibility between HDCP versions, and possibly in the cable (since there are various DVI cables)?

Yeah I read up on both hardware devices that they support and are HDCP compatible.

Amazon's website states that you may not get HD quality if you run Win PC and DVI, so maybe that's it. However, that just seems odd that the monitor and vid card say HDCP compliant, yet it doesn't work for Amazon.

I will try disabling silverlight.

I have no problems streaming HD content on Amazon Prime with my monitor hooked up via DVI. My Silverlight automatically updates, and I tried with Internet Explorer. Also running Win7 x64.

A little off-topic, but I didn't know they started allowing HD streaming on the PC... Ever since I got my Fire Stick, I guess I've never really tried.

So I tried disabling silverlight and only used adobe...same problem.

Something I did notice was that some content I am able to view HD (the HD box turns blue). Band of Brothers allows me to watch it in HD.

But when I was watching "I, Frankenstein", the HD icon was grayed out and when I hovered over it, it says my display is not HDCP compatible.

It very well could be the DVI cable...I guess I can try using analog/VGA, but will have to dig around for a cable.

Do you have a 2nd monitor connected?

I have an Acer monitor that is connected via DVI and an older Dell monitor that I connect via VGA. If I unplug the VGA cable to the Dell monitor then I can play Amazon Movies in HD. If I plug VGA back in then HD is disabled, it doesn't matter if the monitor is on or off.

TV shows aren't restricted the same way movies are. That's why you can watch Band of Brothers.

Hm, ok think I figured out my problem. I googled and found a discussion thread on amazon's website and someone mentioned that he unplugged one of his monitors (he was dual screening).

i did the same and boom, I can now watch HD on my one monitor. My second monitor may not be HDCP compatible (2005 sony 1280x1024 monitor), so that may have been the cause.

Seems silly that it can't detect one monitor being HDCP compatible.

Just found that out via google search, but thanks for the response! Confirms the issue for me.

Can't have you dragging that HDCP content over onto the non-HDCP display!

Glad you got it figured out.

None of that matters to digital stream over internet. Its simple a HD stream of a HD copy.
I've streamed HD on DVI TV from amazon, tablet, wifi, etc. All it matters is if internet can handle the stream, and you have correct rez device.
