hello, recently my trend micro pc-cillin virus scan alerted me that i have an infected file, under some local settings folder i believe (in XP) and the name of the virus is js_noclose. well, it claimed that it was clean then, but later it alerts me that a new file is infected by this same virus, but this time the infected file is the virus scanning file that cleans files... quite a doozy. so, my situation/question, is what can i do to clean this virus off my comp before loading mcafee 6.0 virus scan onto my comp? I dont want to load mcafee into an infected comp and have it automatically become infected itself... I tried using a norton emergency scan program on boot-up, but the cd itself is around 1.5 years old, thus rendering it worthless to detecting this more modern virus... what can i do? Thank you

Go to Antivirus.com and look for their free, on-line scanner called HouseCall. It takes a little while to load, but then can do a complete scan and fix errors.

I've found it to be a good "post-mortem" virus detector -- it'll tell you that you have a virus and fix it, but won't prevent you from getting the next one.

Good luck

thanks for the recommendation. gave it a try but house call hung at its start screen on my problem machine. tried it on my older box and it ran fine . . . so, need to find another tactic. haven't picked up virus scan 6.0 yet - maybe that will find the problem when installing. any other suggestions?

try un-installing your virus scan, then opening some of the infected files... once they become more active, maybe then your virus scan will detect them... maybe? go ahead and give it a shot

If you haven't purchased your choice of antivirus software, I would suggest you go ahead and do so.

I think Mcafee has it's own boot cd/disk that is write-protected. Since your using XP, you might want to call Mcafee/Norton to see if their latest CD can read NTFS if your using that file system.
