Help with video encoding

Hi all. I have a problem enconding h.264 hd files my canon digital camcorder records to any other format such as fir burning to DVD. The video comes out choppy and out of sync with the audio. I have tried several programs. My pc also struggles playing the original files as well. Here are myspecs.

Amd athlon II 440 x3 with 4th core unlocked
4gb ddr3 1600
Biostar ta790gxb3 mobo
500gb 7200rpm hdd
120gb 7200rpm hdd
1gb pny video card
Win 7 64 ultimate

It begins with the initial transfer and follows through the whole process.

What software are you using to capture and edit the video?
