help with via ac97 audio after reformat

i bought this via p4pb400-fl board and celeron 2.4 gig processor one month ago, and the soumd on the onboard chip was pretty crappy. after reformat it is completely useless. i have tried six different drivers, and finaly a couple not even designed for via. no luck, it is total crap. would i have better luck just buying a $10 soundblaster?

That may be a solution and if the onboard is hosed, I'd definately go the cheap pci sound route.
