I have the following:

ABIT IP35E
4GB RAM
Several HDs etc.,

I am going to buy an SSD for my boot drive and replace my valiant E4500 running at 3.0ghz.

I was looking at the following combo to eek out another year or so before I do a major upgrade.

SSD

OCZ VERTEX 60GB

CPU

Q9550

My goal is improve the speed "feel" and improve my video encoding times in Adobe premiere and other video editing programs.

Can I do better for under $500? But, I'm not interested in a i-5/6 system yet.

The Q9550 is most likely going to be an E0 stepping, which is not supported by any of the official BIOSes for the IP35-E. You'll need to search out the beta BIOS, which, if it works, will probably not let you overclock.

If you can find a Q6700, it will have approximately the same performance as a Q9550 anyway. And they are all the improved stepping of Kentsfield as well, most seem to be quite happy at ~3.6ghz or so on a decent board such as yours.

You don't want to be running an overclocked Q6600 or Q6700 on an IP35-E either. The VRMs degrade too quickly.

Good to know - may think about the bigger upgrade now...

Oooooo really?, is that the same for the IP35 STD, have been running 3Ghz since I got it 18 months ago!
