Help with UDMA mode 5 in WinXP

How do i enable UDMA mode 5 (ata100) under windows xp with sp1. It defaults to udma mode 4 (ata66) no matter what i do. The only way to enable udma mode 5 is to install the intel application accelerator. However, for some reason, it changes the transfer mode of my dvdrom from multi word dma 2 to pio4. So is there a way to enable udma 5 without installing the intel application accelerator?

not sure why, but my XP is running mode 5.

BIOS issue maybe?
Chipset driver issue?
80pin cable installed?

or maybe just not bother trying to solve this mystery?

what hdd do you have?
some manufacturers offer an utility to switch the ata mode of the hdd!

Yes, the cables are ata100 for sure. With intel application accelerator installed, it runs at udma mode 5 and benchmarking with hd tach confirms it. However, the downside is that it forces my dvdrom to run at pio4. I have the Maxtor Diamond Max plus 30GB model.
I have p4-1.6A@2.24, i845 mobo (epox 4bda2+), 256MB of ram, with winxp sp1 and lastest intel chipset drivers. Oh well, i guess i'll just leave it alone.

I see we have the same motherboard (other than yours adding onboard RAID), so that might be the source of our problem. I guess I will try that Intel accelerator and hope it doesn't mess with my other drives

EDIT: I installed the utility and according to it everything is running in the proper mode

I have heard that WinXP will drop the UDMA speed on the drive if it gets a read/write error, etc. I had this issue as well. At the time, I had a Zip hooked on the same chain, so this might have been the reason for the errors or whatever was causing it to drop.


My solution - Install the Intel Application Accelerator, and forget about it.
