help with two network cards

i have two cards installed, one is hooked up to a cable modem/router (connection 2)
the other is our companies LAN (connection 1)

if i disable connection 1, i can surf the net through the cable connection
if i disable connection 2, i can surf the net through the LAN's proxy, and access all of the network drives

how can i set up my internet to go through connection 2 (cable modem) and not through the lan's proxy and still have access to the network drives?

please help

Do I understand that you have two or more operating systems on this computer? And you have it hooked to your company's LAN????

OK, forgetting all the headaches you must be for your network administrator . . . what operating system are you using when you want to connect to both the LAN and your own private WAN? What operating system is administrating your LAN? What protocols are being used? I will presume that your modem/router is your DHCP server for that side. Do you have something serving IP addresses on the LAN, or are you using assigned addresses? What resources on your system are being shared under each OS? What LAN resources are being shared to you, and what operating system are they using? What is the make and model of each NIC?

With this, we should be able to give you some useful advice, because what you are attempting to do can happen, but exactly how would be determined by the answers to the above questions.

one operating system: windows XP
its my work computer

not sure what system is admistrating the LAN...theres a very wide variety of machines and OSes on it (mac, unix, linux, windows)
protocols installed on the connection are Microsoft networking (forgot actual name) and tcp/ip

the modem/router is set for dhcp right now, but with a little work i can configure it for static (i have complete control of it)
the LAN is also dhcp

not sure about lan resources being shared to me...not sure what that means

one NIC is a linksys, the other is an IBM (oem)

i posted this same question over in the networking forum (forgot that i had my forums customized, and couldn't see it when i posted this)

Why can't you set the modems IP as the gateway and disable the proxy on the LAN?

because theres 400 other people in the building that need to use that proxy for their internet...only my department will be using the cable connection for our internet

This was cross posted here, I suggest we finish the discussion in the networking forum.
