Help with Toshiba Satellite Notebook Battery

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2805-S402 Laptop that is about 3.5 years old.

My problem is with the battery. I have a LED indicator on my laptop which shows:

orange - charging
green - fully charged
blank - no AC power or battery is fully discharged.

What I get is a flashing orange...and that's not explained anywhere in my manual. I would just buy a new battery but I don't know 100% whether it is my battery that is dead or if there is something wrong with my laptop (either could be the problem). I don't want to spend $30+ on ebay for a new battery only to find out that it wasn't the battery that was the problem.

I've reseated the battery numerous times, cleaned the contacts, and went through win xp to see if there were any settings to change and whatnot...nothing worked.

I know I'm not leaving myself with too many options and perhaps the only way to find out my problem is
to buy a new battery, but I thought I'd ask here and maybe a toshiba expert has seen this problem before.

Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried the Toshiba support forum? -->http://forums.compuserve.com/gvforums/default.asp?SRV=Toshiba&loc=us

There's a thread over there about the blinking battery indicator light and the Toshiba tech says "Blinking power LEDs indicate a fault in the power system. Have the system checked out by an authorized service provider" and he goes on to list authorized service centers.

If you live within driving distance they'll give you a free estimate. But if it's a power prob on the motherboard, it's really not worth getting it fixed.
