I'm helping a friend build a new PC with an ASUS P4B533 Mobo and P4. When we boot, it goest right to the BIOS and displays this error.
"During the last boot up your system hung for an improper CPU Externa Speed Setting. Check CPU Speed conforms to the specs of the CPU."
I'm not sure where I should begin trouble shooting. Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure that the cpu parameters, ie the bus speed, is set correctly in the bios. Go into the bios and select the fsb speed, normally 133MHz and the save and exit the bios. If the CPU runs on a 100MHz bus then set it to 100MHz instead.

should be whats wrong.

We're still having problems with this PC. We were able to install Windows XP on it and it ran fine for about a day and now it locks up when booting it. When we are able to get into the BIOS it gives an error message about improper CPU speed settings but I'm not sure where to change that. I'm pretty BIOS illeteriate but would appreciate any help through this!

Thanks

could be the cpu isn't being properly recognised with the present bios.
have you checked to see if there's a bios update for that board on the asus site?
