Help with task manager

Hello All,
I am running Win 2000 Pro SP 4. Recently, and for some unknown reason, task manager displays only CPU usage and CPU Usage history. No running application list, no memory usage etc. Just the aforementioned CPU info. Also, unlike other running apps, the box in the toolbar corresponding to task manager is unnamed, which makes me think there is a file corruption (or some such) rather than some display setting being accidentally toggled. I reinstalled Win 2k but the problem persists. Any ideas from the Windows veterans? Thanks for your help.
