Help with spyware

Some spyware popped up on my computer and changed my desktop to this. It was a browser-type window behind my desktop icons. I ran Ad-aware, Bazooka and Spybot Search and Destroy, but every time I open IE, my home page looks like the blue screen of death and warns about spyware and vulnerabilities, etc. When I got to a different website, it gives me this massive porn popup that takes up the whole screen and I have to Alt-F4 it. Anyone have any ideas or other software I can try?

When I try deleting this:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html

It just comes back again.

Mark the following with HijackThis then let it fix them:

First, you're going to need to boot into Safe Mode and delete this files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sngjy.dll
C:\install.cab

Then Run HJT again and mark the following and press "Fix Selected":

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {11A9C4B9-5BE8-4B1F-924E-99A404931A26} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sngjy.dll

O16 - DPF: {1C78AB3F-A857-482E-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - file://C:\install.cab
O16 - DPF: {917623D1-D8E5-11D2-BE8B-00104B06BDE3} (CamImage Class) - http://216.70.11.13/activex/AxisCamControl.cab
O16 - DPF: {9EB320CE-BE1D-4304-A081-4B4665414BEF} - http://www.mt-download.com/MediaTicketsInstaller.cab

You may also want to uninstall and delete this - it's known to cause all kinds of problems:
C:\Program Files\PeerGuardian pr14\PeerGuardian_1.99b_pr14.exe

It's also related to this:
O16 - DPF: {4D7F48C0-CB49-4EA6-97D4-04F4EACC2F3B} (InstallShield Setup Player 2K2) - http://www.napster.com/client/setup.exe

... which you might also want to kill since it's known to be a great source for such bugs...

Try these, then download and install SpywareBlaster. Then update it.

Then, you need to get a good Antivirus -- install it and keep it updated!

Reboot, rescan, and repost your hjt log. We'll see how it behaves then.

edit: missed one...

I have tried using Ad-aware and Spybot and while those provide nice scanning they don't find everything

google "Pest Patrol"

it lets you download the trial program, it will scan just about everything, but its not going to let you delete anything.

I do it manually.

Also, command prompt works wonders when it comes to deleting files.

also check this key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Shell var should only be "explorer.exe" (unless you are running a different shell, like Lite Step, etc)

that path is on my XP box.

Next, you need to run a good, updated antivirus.

Since you don't have one installed, try Housecall. Let it fix anything it finds. You might also want to make notes of what it finds, in case it can't remove something...

You've got some remnants of a trojan that might still be part of the problem... You might want to work through the manual removal instructions listed here.

You'll also need to delete C:\WINDOWS\secure.html.

After you've done these things, rerun HJT and delete those secure.html lines if they're still there. Then repost.

I think we're just about there.

I ran Symantec virus scanner, it found a few things and deleted them. They were called mstasks3.exe and mstasks4.exe. It also said C:\Windows\system32\system.dll is infected, but cannot be repaired or quarantined. I deleted C:\Windows\secure.html, but it instantly reappears within a few seconds. I reran HT and deleted the secure.html items, but they come back again.

Edit: I forgot to mention I followed the instructions you linked to for removing the trojan.

Just to let you know I'm not forgetting this ---

This particular hijack is fairly new (just discovered in the last couple of days) and the "experts" are still working on a solution. All of the methods we typically use aren't working. No matter what we try, it just comes back and we haven't entirely determined why.

A few more days of research will probably detect the cause, but until then ...

MSites -- that solution only works occasionally, if you've been lucky enough to catch the infection quite early...

Well for whatever reason, CWShredder worked for me. Thanks Msites for posting this, good luck to others with this problem.
