Help with Soundbvlaster Live! and Abit KT7

I bought an Abit KT-133 socket A motherboard along with a Soundblaster Live! OEM soundcard. When I installed the motherboard, I did not do a clean W98 install..just installed the new drivers over the old. Likewise with the soundcard, I deleted the old drivers and installed the whole load of crap that Creative give you. This all worked fine.

After now reinstalling the whole system from scratch, when W98 detects the Live! soundcard, I get the blue error screen, and after that, the system just stalls. Occasionally it just crashes so I have to do a hard reset. I think it crashes when it tries to install the SB16 emulation.

The card is installed in PCI slot 3, as it was before. I am at a complete loss as to why the card worked fine before, and after a clean install it now doesn't even install. I've tried the other PCI slots but it doesn't make any difference.

Any help that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.
